The Blender Market and Blend Swap.
As some of you may know, the guys over at CGcookie are launching the blendermarket.com soon. I think the Blender Market is a great idea, so much so, that I've joined the CGCookie Crew to help make blendermarket.com a reality.
First and foremost, Blend Swap is not going anywhere. I created Blend Swap 5 years ago and I could never have imagined what it was to become. I thank all of you for that. However, when I created Blend Swap I saw a need in the community that I didn’t think was being filled. A place for people to share models with other users without the worry of hosting the files, broken links or weeding through forum pages to find models.
Just like I saw a need for a site like Blend Swap I think many of us are now finding ourselves in need of production ready models and add-ons in our professional life. So why not just use one of the other 3D marketplace sites? Like many of you, we are fiercely dedicated to Blender and the Blender community. Other marketplaces allow anyone to upload, for the most part, without a lot of quality control. Not to mention trying to find a Blender native file there. Additionally, they have no connection to the community.
Blend Swap was set up to be a free model repository and that’s what it will stay. It was never meant to support customers or vendors. I’ve also noticed that many of the top users on Blend Swap leave the site once they hit the top 5% of the talent pool on the site. I don’t know the reasons for this but I imagine that it’s because they are acquiring more freelance work or have obtained a job with their growing skills.
The Blender Market will give these artist and many others a place to make a living using Blender. By offering production ready models, assets and addons for Blender.
