    How was the 3D texture of the ball itself done? I've always wondered how to do this but never tried.

    Thanks so much! I found that the laces were not overlapping with the ball very evenly, and so I used a Shrinkwrap Modifier before the Solidify Modifier you had in place, and that fixed it nicely.
