Description:

Check out my latest here. It's more accurately modeled after real wood.

This is a procedural wood shader for cycles. I think it looks pretty good for the objects I've tried. You can tweak the colors in the Mix node to get different looks. Also the scale in the Mapping node might be necessary...I didn't realize this shader ball was only 11 cm. I should point out that the scene setup is NOT mine. The ONLY part I did was the wood shader.

Also, I have been trying to use this setup to make a wood plank shader (like a wood floor) but I can't get it to look good...so if anyone can do that, please do that and upload it!

A polished coating could add realism (e.g. mixing your material with a glossy BRDF).

Thanks. I wanted to keep it as "raw" wood, but I added a glossy node so it's easier for people to tweak it. The default is very low gloss. It does look quite a bit better!

for wooden planks check this out: http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?216113-Brecht-s-easter-egg-surprise-Modernizing-shading-and-rendering&p=2191356&viewfull=1#post2191356

Thanks for that BYOB...maybe I should check out this brick shader. The thing is that I have managed to create a similar brick shader already, but I can't figure out how to plug it into the wood....so far everywhere I've tried doesn't do the job. There's some interesting stuff in that thread that I might try to decipher.

@Sizzler, where did you get the material ball? Thanks

I got it from this one by JC Levet: http://www.blendswap.com/blends/materials/galvanized-steel-shader/

...but I could've sworn it's freely available somewhere else too? I believe it's the same one used in the Blender wiki?

ah yes, supposedly it's in SVN for blender: /trunk/lib/tests/rendering/cycles/bmps.blend

Thanks! if you make anything nice with it, I'd like to see it. I've got 1187 downloads but I've only spotted one object on BA that used it...so I'm wondering if it actually is working for people or not.

I know at least one person who used it: me. :)

I had to tweak scale params in the Mapping node as you mentioned and then it was all good.

    Thanks!

How could you change the brown wood color to another color ? Thanks !

In the shader nodes, there is a node group called "DECWoodGrain." Select that and hit Tab, which will show you all the internal nodes of that group. Over to the right side there is a "Mix" node with two colors that affect the wood and grain colors. At some point I should expose those as inputs and reupload this blend to make it easier!
