A complex node setup for a squared filled carpet material in cycle
It includes the carpet texture and bump map. It also include a chessbox texture for the carpet pattern

is there some proper way to apply this texture? It is always stretched when I try to apply it to some object other than the one in your scene.
Have you tried fit to an uv unwrapped model?
