There are numerous earth scenes available already, so why another one?
My version offers some features, that most other earth models don't have: 1. It shows the city lights on the shadow side only. Depending on the orientation of the sunlight the city lights texture will only be rendered on the non-lit side of the planet. No scripts, drivers or compositing nodes were used, just some shader tricks. 2. The stars in the background are not a texture, but generated by a particle system, making them appear crisp and sharp. Their number and brightness can be easily adjusted.
I used high resolution (16k) textures from NASA for believable results from wide angle to medium shots. Clouds and atmosphere layers are included and can be rendered as separate Renderlayers. By default, only the "Beauty" layer is activated, which doesn't contain clouds, atmosphere and stars. If you want all of those elements rendered in only one layer, just enable "Stars", "Atmosphere" and "Clouds" layers for the "Beauty_Lr" Renderlayer.
