A procedural hexagonal grid I put together with animation nodes. I add a few general labels to the node tree, but I'm open to clarifying things further if you have any questions. The PBR shader was made from Blender Guru's YouTube tutorial. Filmic Blender and Cycles were used for rendering.
Sure thing! With my limited experience working with drivers, I can definitely see how the movement of the objects could be controlled using them. I just chose to use Animation Nodes for this because it makes working with a large number of objects much simpler.
