Description:

A model of a Yamaha "upright grand" piano. The main measurements are to scale (1bu = 1m) but I eyeballed some of the finer details. There's also a stool, a metronome (case only) and a standing lamp. Anything with a hinge is articulated, but the keys themselves aren't.

It's called an "upright grand" because it's quite a bit taller than the average upright, allowing the bass strings to be longer, therefore strung tighter, therefore sounding brighter. It doesn't compare with a real 9-foot grand though.

All textures are procedural and of my own devising except:

  • Sheet music text: first 2 pages of a free pdf download of Debussy's "Claire de Lune" from http://www.free-scores.com/
  • Carpet: Carpet0023 from http://www.textures.com/ ran through crazyBump to get normal, diffuse and specular maps.
  • Environment Lighting: Alexs Apartment from http://www.hdrlabs.com/sibl/archive.html

This is the first model I've uploaded here so please be gentle.

I try your blend "The Yamaha Up Grand Piano" but I render the black image. It disapoint me. I klik on piano, but there is no material icon, just enviropment image. I can not fnd materials for piano, a stool and the carpet. Are you use some material library addOn?

I'm sorry for that, all the textures are baked in to the file, so it should just work. Re. selecting, I deliberately disabled selection of individual components of the model other than those which can be rotated. there's a parent empty for each model which you can use to move them around.

Since you report a problem I'll try copying the blend file to a new location and seeing if it still renders. I may have links rather than appends of some of my node groups. If so I'll upload a fix tonight (I'm at work at the moment.)

It's the same for me...it seems as if there is nothing connected to the material output. Are the PBR nodegroups linked to another blendfile?

I'm sorry, it was my fault. I thought that when I packed all external data it would change linked node groups to appends, but it didn't. I've gone through the file and made local copies of all of those linked groups, It wasn't rendering properly for me either when I moved it somewhere else, now it does.

So all fixed now, I've replaced the bad file. I'm really sorry about wasting your time, hopefully you like the blend anyway.

I like your blend. It is hard work on models. Let us to see with textures. :o)

Yes, black again. What are nodes and links to some library?

This is very embarrassing, I was linking to 2 external blend files with some node trees that I use when I first published this, but I was certain I'd gone through and made local copies of all of them before pushing my update. Anyway I've just found a tip on Blender Stack Exchange to do "Pack Blender Libraries" which promises to bring them in. I've done that, pushed a second update, made it the default and deleted the old version.

I'm very sorry about my lack of experience in doing this. It's my first try at uploading a model (I'd just uploaded a utility file before that with no problems.)

If I've not outworn your patience, please give it another try.

Thanks so much for confirming that it works. I love your hammer action, I'd considered modelling the mechanism of my piano (briefly) but decided that was just too much work.

Re CPU, yes, I'm on a Mac with an unsupported GPU so I'm stuck with it, but of course feel free to change settings appropriately for your setup.
