Description:

I did this chest in cycles for a scene but the scene wouldn't render with this in it so I had to pull it. That being said I didn't want it to just sit on my computer so I am sharing it with who ever can use it. All the textures are from plaintextures.com. I should also say that at last on my computer which is actually a beast of a rig, this would not render with the GPU (Not sure why), it will render with CPU and takes about 5 minutes. If anyone who downloads this can give me some advice on why this may be happening, like the settings that I am using then please, please let me know. Enjoy and happy blending.

(Update note; for those who may be having issues with rendering this blend, reduce the subsurf mod to 2 on the knot work and it should work fine for you. I didn't realize until afer the fact that I had it set to 4 and it doesn't need to be. It works on my comp but I havea beast of a computer so it was not an issue for me and why I didn't really notice that I had done that.)

Very Nice! Like all your stuff I have looked at. Cool thanks for sharing. Lots to learn with Blender but it puts out great results.

Thank you. I appreciate that. Your first blend is a great start. Can't wait to see what you do in the future.

I love your attention to detail, I analyze your scenes and learn a lot from you. This piece is awesome, especially the filigrees on the chest, how did you do them. Any chance of a quick tutorial. The dirty gold texture too, do you mind if I "steal" that and add to my library, LOL. I can always tell you work even before I click the pic to see your name.

    Awesome.

If I knew how to make a tutorial I would...lol I also don't have a microphone so it would be a very quite tutorial...lol. That being said the best tutorial that I have ever seen and use frequently is from Andrew Price on blenderguru.com. it is the basis for all of my current texturing work.

    http://www.blenderguru.com/videos/create-realistic-materials-with-cycles/

You are more then welcome to use the dirty gold though I can't take credit for the individual textures that are used to make up the end result. Those came from plaintextures.com. That is a great site and I use this site exclusively for textures. I used to use CGtextures but can't post any of my textured work using those found on that site so I moved over to plaintextures.com.

Once I get a digital camera I will start making my own texture library which I will also share on blend swap. I personally think that we all need to support each other in our efforts to promote cg work of any kind even if we can't do it financially.

Incidentally, the knot work on the chest is modeled after a picture that I found online. It was a design on the handle of a sword but I liked it so much that I used it as a template for what you see. I used a plane and extruded out the basic shape of the knot work. (I added the picture as a background image in the view port.) Once I had what I wanted I then lifted along the z axis those parts that were both above and below to give it that tied appearance. Then I selected all and extruded on the z. Made some small corrections to the mesh after that and done. It actually took about 10 minutes to make it.

    Really beautiful filigree work.

About your prospective texture library: I find that the Open Material Repository is a good resource. I believe that some users upload their texture there and then link to their model on here or to their post on BlenderArtists.org.

About:I should also say that at last on my computer which is actually a beast of a rig, this would not render with the GPU (Not sure why)

I tryed it is over my GPU's 1.5 g, it looked like it wanted 2 g. to render? not shure on that.

    And again nice work!

ya, not really sure why it will only render under the CPU. It's not that big a blend, the textures are not that large or layered and the modeling is not that complicated. This was a head scratcher for sure. I hope that it works at least using the CPU. Incidentally my computer is a rig also, had it built for blender specifically and it wouldn't render with my GPU either. I'm going to revisit this blend in a bit once I am done with another that I am currently working on to see what the issue actually is. Thanks for the feedback though. At least I know it's not my computer. When I thought that it was I was almost angry at the fact that I had spent all this money to get a comp that was blender specific and then all of a sudden it didn't work. It may also be a 2.70 bug but tried it in 2.69 and did the same thing but it was built with 2.70 so not sure if that is the reason.

Thanks mate, and JDHaller this blend won't render on my 1.5GB cards either.

I have a 2GB card and it wouldn't render. Again strange as this blend is really not that complicated.

I've tried turning the console window open and I get a report saying 'CUDA error: Out of Memory in cuMemAlloc(&device_pointer, size)'

If you can suss out where that error is coming from, you'll likely resolve why it won't render under GPU. I'll have a look myself but I can't help too much given I don't really know how to use the Cycles engine at this given time. Perform a render on your computer (in GPU) and turn on the Console window ('Window > Toggle System Console' in the Info header in Blender).

Okay, as per the instructions on this thread:

    http://www.elysiun.com/forum/showthread.php?320533-What-the-heck-did-I-do-now

Apply ALL modifiers and you should be able to render your scene. I don't know why it would cause a conflict, but it worked fine on my computer (once all modifiers were applied on your objects). Frig knows why THAT of all things would be important... but there you have it. You should submit a bug report to Blender if needs be if you think it is a bug (I'm not 100% sure).

Apply modifiers from all objects parented to 'chest bottom' and 'chest top.' I also had to set it to 'Path Tracing' under the tab 'Sampling' with Render samples at 50 to get a picture (for testing).

As a side note, is there a reason you need a level FOUR subdivision surface on the mesh you've labelled 'Chest Bottom Knot Work' and 'Chest Top Knot Work?' Turning just them down to a 'Render 2' made it render fine for me (without having to touch other modifiers). It just seemed a little excessive to me for fairly small detail like that.

Thank you, thank you. You were right and strangely I didn't realize that I had it turned up to four. It's rare for me to go that high even on larger details. Thanks for that.

To everyone; Please thank KurtisC for seeing something in the blend that I actually totally didn't notice...and it's my blend...lol turn the subdivisions down to 2 and it rendered fine on my rig. I never do 4 and can't believe that I had the knot work set so high. Thank you again KurtisC. I appreciate the help on this one.
