During manic episodes, individuals may feel euphoric, highly energetic, and have rapid thoughts. They might engage in risky behaviors like excessive spending, reckless driving, or substance abuse. In contrast, depressive episodes are characterized by feelings of hopelessness, low energy, and a loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities. Suicidal thoughts or behaviors are also common during these depressive periods.

Bipolar disorder is classified into several types, including Bipolar I Disorder, which involves manic episodes lasting at least seven days or requiring hospitalization, and Bipolar II Disorder, which includes recurrent depressive episodes alternating with hypomanic episodes. Cyclothymic Disorder involves numerous periods of hypomanic and depressive symptoms that don't meet the criteria for full-blown episodes.
