Description:

This is a node-setup which will generate you contours from the normal and Z pass of a render. Contours will appear at sharp edges and at differences in the Z channel ( for example where an object ends).

    Nice setup, it works.

It is not a Cycles shader, it is just a node setup for post processing an image. This means you can use it with Blender Internal as well.

First I stumble upon the tutorial for this. And now I stumble upon this file. Either I'm good at stumbling. Or I really need to get to work on my own contours xD.

Thanks! About the file you offer here for download I wonder how you was able to handwrite on the Graph Editor window. It is very useful for classrooms...

Hmm, I discover you used a tool named GPencil. I'll study more of this tool.

Thanks for sharing, Daniel, it's been exceptionally useful :-)

This is quite a complex set-up for a nodes beginner like me and I don't understand how to use it. I watched your tutorial at http://www.blendernation.com/2012/08/27/rendering-contours-with-nodes/ but did not know enough to be able to follow it, despite trying to make a transcript. I need a really ABC simple tutorial.

Through experimenting I managed to alter the background colour to pure white. But that was all I have been able to do so far. I can't even make it work with my own camera.

However, it gives me such good results that I have been appending all my models to a copy of your blend file.

If I try to move your camera to where my appended models are, the render doesn't work. So I have to move my models to where the camera is! Despite moving the camera focus empty around.

However, the results are so worth it.

    Thanks again.

    Thank you!

For a gorgeous ink shader effect, try changing the Factor on the Difference node in the "Frame" part.
