Description:

Bumblebee!

Made and Rendered in Blender 2.59

I tried recreating Bumblebee from the Transformers movie sequel. This by far the most complex scene I have made in Blender. It took me about 5 months, literally, to pull this off. I have never worked on it more than an hour in a day though. The biggest challenge was modeling without proper reference images. I’ve browsed several sites looking for proper reference images but failed. So I decided to use snapshots from the actual movie. I sketched out each piece at a time and I went to modeling. I mostly used box-modeling technique.

Lighting was pretty straight forward I used a Sun lamp as a key and fill, and also an Area rim light. I added AO and Environmental Lighting but I didn’t use it for the final render (above).

Material nodes were helpful in bring up some saturation. All the texturing was done with procedural textures except one scratch map from CGtextures (MetalScratches0037_2_S.jpg), which the scene will still look good without.

Rendering (with Blender Internal) took 11 mins. on my 4.3 Ghz laptop. I used the compositor for some Color grading, DOF, and a little glow. Then I switched to GIMP and adjusted some curves, added more Color grading, and a cute lens flare to top it all off. I also flipped the image horizontally for no apparent reason (so the blend file is horizontally the opposite of the image above).

I hope this will be a great resource for those of you who like “reverse engineering”.

Enjoy!

Didn't even catch that thanks Muritaka, Zero4Mike you need to remove the cgtexture.com texture if it isn't already. Thanks

Matthew, I had already removed the image file when I uploaded it the first time. The texture(M_scratches) that uses the Cgtextures.com image, is still in the blend but with out the image itself packed in the blend, it is useless. I only mentioned it on the description if others wanted to use the same texture from Cgtextures.com that I used. Please let me know if I am violating anything from the agreement. Thanks.

Really great model! To be honest, I was initially a little disappointed when I opened the file and it was just the head, but still, really great modeling, thanks for sharing!

Hello Greg, like I said the lack of references was really holding me back from actually finishing the whole robot. Simple sketches from snapshots wasn't that much of a resource. Thanks. ;-)

Any1 could tell me two things? First why when i render 1 frame in jpeg or something else by clicking render image, after everything it doesn't shows and second thing when I want to swap in the cycles render engine to render by GPU, its rendering but it doesn't show any textures at all only black colour instead of it. Please help. Thx.

Hello Irokrhus, I don't quite understand your first issue but this scene is made in Blender Internal and rendering it in Cycles will not yield the same result. Try rendering it in Blender Render...it should work! :)

this is not an issue related to ur model which is awesome. I've problems with it for the long time. There are two options what we can render: we can render our model by animation or by an image. The second option after rendering doesn't shows the final rendered file idk why.

Well, have you tried setting the internal nodes to cycles nodes? I believe that internal materials do not work in cycles.

Simply because all of the textures are procedural, blender generates them.
