Description:

The focus of this project was to create a hopefully interesting seamless tile from scratch.

I discovered that it isn't as easy as it sounds. Lots of tiles that are advertised as seamless have obvious seams, and I was trying to create something unique in which the seams were not obvious.

The seamless tile JPG image and the blender file that created the Blendswap image are both included in the download file.

Also, this is my first venture into Cycles just as I was getting the hang of the Blender internal lighting as a beginner. I find Cycles easier to use in creating some materials, but much more difficult to use in other aspects. For example, creating glass and glossy materials is very easy. Also the defocus option is much easier than using the compositor in the Blender Internal renderer.

On the other hand, getting a texture image into Cycles is not very intuitive.

I'm sure it will get easier with practice.

I had a couple of objectives in this project. First, I wanted to create a truly seamless tile from scratch. Second, I wanted to put my toe in the Cycles water to see how cold it might be. Third, I wanted to create a couple of simple Cycles materials to get the feel of it.

In the blend file are several glass balls of different sizes and colors, a chrome ball, and a black obsidian-like ball. There is a metal box that uses the light colored texture in the tile image.

And finally, I wanted to try out the defocus option in Cycles.

To create a quick normal map in Blender Internal, it's an easy click and experiment with the settings. I haven't yet found the same capability in Cycles. It may be there, but I haven't stumbled across it yet.

I'll be exploring that over the next week or so (I do have a day job, so learning Blender is a slow process for me). If I figure it out, I'll upload a modification.

Meanwhile, If you know how to do it or create bump and normal maps for the seamless tile, please go ahead and upload it for me and others to reverse engineer.

Feel free to use the seamless tile and anything else in the blend file however you like. For me the reward was the learning experience.

I think normal maps in cycles is a 'to do task'. It is not yet implemented. Check "http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:2.6/Source/Render/Cycles/ToDo".
