Description:

This is a modern fighter jet with the "Canard" wing configuration. Inspired by the Sukhoi SU-35/37 series Russian fighter jets.

Model is fully rigged and textured. Also comes with optional nose-art. Cockpit and ejection seat are modeled. No pilot.

Armature movement is automatic where appropriate (landing gear only requires rotating one bone, wheels and turbines spin automatically when moving forward etc.). Detailed instructions are included in the file.

(UPDATE: Fixed some minor texture issues, added weapons - 3 types of guided missiles, 1 unguided bomb, and right shoulder mounted machine gun. Updated cockpit with instrument displays. )

Did you do all the texturing in Blender, or did you use external programs? I may have to look into Blender's texture paint features; my new computer can actually handle them...

Textures were started in Blender with basic diffuse colours using texture paint. Then a layer of baked ambient occlusion. Since UV maps didn't necessarily map to straight lines where they were supposed to on the model, I thought I would have to end up drawing lines by hand with a very steady hand using Blender's live texture paint. Fortunately I found a blender plugin called "Texture Paint Plus" that adds the ability to draw straight lines. So that let me do all the bump and spec mapping inside Blender.

I had to bring it over to Photoshop to do the layers for paint scratches and the text for the labels. I don't know how I would do that in Blender internally but would love to hear if anyone else does. GIMP would have worked just as well, but that's personal preference.

Lastly the nose art I drew with a tablet in MyPaint, which is a Free Open Source program that I love, and highly recommend.

This is amazing! A retractable fuel probe would enhance the model even more. This looks a lot like a SU-37.

can you make a tutorial how to model an airplane?

Modelling an airplane is not much different than modelling any other vehicle or mechanical object. The secret is simply reference, reference, and REFERENCE. At least 10% of the time I spent on this project was collecting a good set of reference images to draw from. Particularly since this is something that exists in real life.

Other than that, the only other advice I have is that if you practice your modelling skills, you will gain the confidence to model any object without needing a specific tutorial.

Really awesome work! What are your tips for photorealism in texturing/materials on an object?

One of the best model aircraft ever created. Great work! Hope you don't mind printing it on 3D printer. Best regards, Sparky (Slovenia).

Hi, great model. I was extremely supprised how good it was when I opened it up.

I hope you don't mind that I'm planning on porting this over to cycles. I can't stand BI (although you did a great job using it here), it's just to over complicated for me (although some people would argue the same for cycles :) ).

Sorry to be stupid, but how do I get the different statuses of the plane (e.g. the one without landing gear), etc?
